I spent many years caving, camping, and hiking in King’s Canyon National Park.

Kings Canyon National Park is an American national park in the southern Sierra Nevada, in Fresno and Tulare Counties, California. Originally established in 1890 as General Grant National Park, the park was greatly expanded and renamed to Kings Canyon National Park on March 4, 1940. The park’s namesake, Kings Canyon, is a rugged glacier-carved valley more than a mile deep. Other natural features include multiple 14,000-foot peaks, high mountain meadows, swift-flowing rivers, and some of the world’s largest stands of giant sequoia trees. Kings Canyon is north of and contiguous with Sequoia National Park, and the two are jointly administered by the National Park Service as the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

This is a picture of “cave bacon” from Soldier’s Cave in King’s Canyon National Park. There is a light shining through the thin rock. Note the little drop of water at the bottom of the blade! Cave bacon is formed when a thin stream of water dribbles down the edge and slowly leaves deposits over a very long time. In the end you get thin ribbon-like blade formations of minerals. This happens in limestone caves. See caves and mountain photos for more like this.

Snowy Sierra Nevada!

I went caving up in the mountains last weekend. (Lilburn Cave).
It wasn’t snowing on the hike in, but there was plenty of it on the way out.

I managed to bruise and cut my knee, make a hole in my BRAND NEW pants, and twist my ankle something fierce. Ow!

I twisted my ankle… getting DESSERT on the way home.
